ROMANIA: The length of highways increased by 48 kilometers in 2023

The length of highways in Romania increased by 48 kilometers, at the end of 2023, and the length of the public road network totaled 86,388 kilometers, of which 17,677 kilometers (20.4%) were national roads, 35,046 kilometers (40.6%) county roads and 33,665 kilometers (39.0%) of communal roads, according to the data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
From the point of view of the type of surface, the structure of the public road network recorded: 49.4% (42,692 km) modernized roads (in the proportion of 94.2% modernized roads with heavy and medium asphalt coatings), 23.9% (20,671 km) of lightly paved roads and 26.7% (23,025 km) of paved and dirt roads.
Regarding the technical condition of public roads, 27.5% of the length of modernized roads and 39.4% of the length of roads with light road surfaces had exceeded their service life.
Of the length of national roads, 6,189 km (35.0%) were international roads, 997 km (5.6%) highways and 70 km (0.4%) express roads, and from the point of view of the number of traffic lanes 2,161 km (12.2%) were 4-lane roads, 311 km (1.8%) were 3-lane roads and 37 km (0.2%) were 6-lane roads.
51.5% of the length of the county roads were modernized roads and 35.1% of the municipal roads were paved roads.
As of December 31, 2023, the length of public railway lines in operation totals 10,611 km, of which 10,515 km (99.1%) normal gauge lines, 91 km (0.9%) wide gauge lines and 5 km lines narrow gauge.
The density of lines per 1,000 km2 of territory was 44.5 per thousand. The highest densities were recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (206.3 per thousand), the West region (60.0 per thousand), the North-West region (47.8 per thousand) and the South-Muntenia region (43, 8 per thousand).
At the same date, the length of the main tracks was 5,961 km, representing 56.2% of the simple length of the railway lines in operation.
