ROMANIA: Sales of electric cars have collapsed

New car registrations fell by 23% in August of this year, compared to the same period in 2023, while the “green” car segment recorded a 16% decline, of which full electric cars by 69%, emerges from statistics published by the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers (APIA).
At a general level, after the important evolution of the previous months, August 2024 comes with a 24.5% decrease in new vehicle registrations, compared to the same month of the previous year, respectively with a decrease of 27.2% compared to July 2024.
Regarding the market share, the SUV segment is in the first position, with 52.3% of the total (down by 10%, from one year to the next), followed by the C-Class – with a share of 28.7 % (-24.2%) and Class B – share of 11.6% (-36.3%).
Depending on the type of fuel of the registered cars, gasoline engines plus mild hybrid gasoline registered a decrease of 21.9% and thus reached a share of 63.7%.
For cars equipped with diesel engines, plus mild hybrid diesel, the decrease was 44.9%, and the market share 7.8%.
On the other hand, “electrified” cars, namely electric ones (100% and plug-in hybrids), as well as full hybrid ones (which also have electric propulsion without charging from an external source) have, in the eighth month of the year in course, a market share of 28.5%, which exceeds by 20.7 percentage points the share held by diesel engines, the latter also including mild hybrid diesel engines.
In this context, fully electric cars have a 5% share of the market in August 2024, compared to August 2023, when they represented 12.5%, while plug-in hybrid cars have a market share of 5 .9%, up from 3.7% in the same month last year.
The first three best-selling 100% electric cars are: Tesla Model 3 – with 168 units and an increase of 33%, in August 2024 vs August 2023, Tesla Model Y (47 units, -87%) and Hyundai Kona (32 of units).
In the category of Plug-in cars, the ranking is led by Hyundai Tucson – with 111 units and an increase of 236%, followed by Toyota RAV4 (46 units, – 15%) and Volkswagen Golf (29 copies).
At the same time, hybrid cars, without recharging from external sources, have the first place in the Top 3 of August 2024 Toyota Corolla – with 308 units (+35.7% compared to August 2023), then Honda CR-V (164 units) and Toyota RAV4 (149 units, +14.6%).
Official statistics reveal that light commercial vehicles and minibuses recorded, in August 2024, a decrease of 20.7% compared to August of the previous year, of which light commercial vehicles without minibuses recorded a decrease of 18.5%. Over the entire period of the year, compared to the same period last year, registrations of light commercial vehicles increased by 30.9%.
