EU: Belgium asks the European Union to ban imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia

Belgium is urging the European Union to ban Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, warning that firms in the sector cannot break long-term contracts without collective action from Brussels, the country’s energy minister said, quoted by the Financial Times.
The EU must “go further” to block Russian LNG imports as concerns grow that imports will rise further, Tine van der Straten said. “We need a European approach” to the problem, the minister insisted.
Belgium imported the second largest amount of Russian LNG among European countries in 2023, surpassed only by Spain, according to Kpler company data cited by the newspaper. But France is on course to surpass those two countries this year.
Hungary recently announced that it opposes the idea of imposing new sanctions by the European Union on Russian hydrocarbons.
