The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has started the process of qualifying bidders for a huge project of four electricity storage batteries, totaling 8 GWh, according to specialized media
The projects mark the first phase of Saudi Arabia’s battery storage program, designed to support its goal of 50 percent renewable energy by 2030. Each 500 MW installation will operate for four hours, supplying 2,000 MWh to the grid each, it announced Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC).
The four battery farms will be located in Makkah, Qassim and Hail provinces.
Qualifying developers will build and operate the facilities through dedicated SPV-type companies under 15-year operating service (loading/unloading) contracts with SPPC.
The procurement uses a build-own-operate model, with successful bidders taking ownership of the project companies.
The initiative represents the largest coordinated deployment of storage facilities announced worldwide to date. In recent months, Sungrow secured a 7.8 GWh battery storage contract with Saudi Arabia’s Algihaz Holding for projects also in that country.
