ROMANIA: Most likely, in 2024, after many years, we will exceed 1,000 new MW installed in the National Energy System – Burduja

The electricity production capacities put into operation to date total 900 MW and we expect another 100-300 MW by the end of the year, which means that after many years, the level of 1,000 new MW in the National Energy System will be exceeded, declared on Friday, at the end of the Winter Command meeting, the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, reports Agerpres.
“I requested a situation on the production capacities put into operation this year, up to the current date, and we are talking about a total of 900 megawatts. There are 330 MW at Rovinari, group five, there are 54 MW at Bicaz, a hydro-aggregate that was modernized and another investment completed after a long time, plus almost 400 MW of solar, some biomass, storage. Very importantly, we are seeing the first effects of the storage capacities in the National Energy System. To give you an idea, last year, approximately 600 MW power plants were put into operation, and a year before only 60 megawatts”, explained Burduja.
He added that by the end of the year, the expectations are that between 100 and 300 MW can be put into operation, which means that Romania will produce more and more electricity, safer and cleaner.
“The pace of investments is already starting to be seen and we expect that, by the end of this year, 100-200-300 MW can be put into operation, we see how much we succeed and that also depends on the weather. So, most likely, after many years, we will exceed 1,000 new MW in the National Energy System, which means that Romania produces and will produce more and more electricity. This means lower bills for Romanians, in the long run, and energy that is both secure and increasingly cleaner, because many megawatts are already from renewable energy”, the Minister of Energy pointed out.
He also stated that a review of the situation of the National Energy System was also made within the Winter Command and emphasized that, thanks to the wind, Romania exported several hundred MW.
“The wind is blowing, it is good news for the energy system from a production perspective. We have over 2,000 MW. I was looking earlier on the Transelectrica website and we were even exporting several hundred megawatts, which, unfortunately, has not been the case recently. We have a reserve in the reservoirs of 60, 60 or so percent. It is a reasonable level. Of course, it was a year with very low hydraulicity, including a very dry November, which is really atypical for the month of November. That’s why we are glad that we still have these reserves in the reservoirs and we are at a reasonable level”, pointed out Sebastian Burduja.
