ROMANIA: A Greek company with over 100 years of history will become an electricity supplier in Romania

Metlen Energy & Metals, part of the old Greek industrial group Mytilineos founded in 1908, will gain the right to supply electricity in Romania, a market where the Greeks are very active with projects in the production of energy from renewable sources

“Draft decision and report on the confirmation of the right to participate in the electricity markets in Romania, to carry out the activity of supplying electricity, to the company METLEN ENERGY&METALS SA”.

This is one of the decisions that the ANRE Regulatory Committee will take in its meeting to be held on February 4.

Metlen Energy & Metals is an industrial and energy company from Greece, with a consolidated turnover of 5.5 billion euros and has over 6,583 direct and indirect employees in Greece and abroad. Metlen is actually the former Greek group Mytilineos, which has a history of over 100 years.

In 2017, the parent company Mytilineos absorbed its subsidiaries (Aluminium of Greece, METKA, Protergia), forming a large-scale Greek industrial and energy multinational company, which has multiplied its size and expanded its activities across all five continents. “The new transformation involves two business sectors, Energy and Metallurgy, which are fully interconnected and complement each other, while allowing synergies that unlock multiple value,” the Metlen website states.

If ANRE issues the above decision tomorrow, it means that the Greek company will become an energy supplier on the Romanian market, where it is already involved in renewable energy generation projects.

The company Metka EGN, part of the Greek energy and industrial conglomerate, announced in February 2024 the acquisition of three photovoltaic park projects, buying the local companies that developed the projects. Mytilneos was also the developer of two 90 MW photovoltaic projects in southern Romania, purchased by Enel Green Power Romania, which was then purchased by PPC. In addition, in April 2024, PPC and Mytilineos signed a framework cooperation agreement to develop and build a portfolio of solar projects of up to 2000 MW in Italy, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania. The transaction value is estimated at up to 2 billion euros and is expected to be implemented over the next three years.

For Romania, the agreement aims to build 516 MW of capacity. Mytilineos will be in charge of the development and construction of these projects, which will then be purchased by PPC after their connection to the electricity grid of the aforementioned countries is completed.
