Romania will have electricity storage facilities with a capacity of 500 MW by the end of the year

By the end of the year, electricity storage batteries with a power of 500 MW and a capacity of 1,200 MWh will be installed in Romania, said Virgiliu Ivan, head of the National Energy Dispatcher at Transelectrica.

“2024 was the year of the launch of the commissioning of storage in Romania. By the end of 2024, we had collected electricity storage installations in batteries that totaled a power of 137 MW and a capacity of 269 MWh. This year, from what we have seen so far, we can hope that we will exceed 500 MW in power and over 1,000-1,200 MWh in capacity,” said the head of the National Energy Dispatcher (DEN), Virgiliu Ivan, at the “Brașov Energy Day” event.

Ivan also said that, based on his data, most new storage installations will be commissioned after mid-year.

“Energy is an unpolished diamond. Storage facilities have the role of polishing this diamond so that investors and the energy system benefit from its beauty. We must encourage investors to develop storage capacities,” Ivan added.

The head of DEN also said that Transelectrica has put information about storage capacities in Romania in the public database of ENTSO-E (European Transmission and System Operators Association – ed.).

“There, there is a platform with public data, it can be accessed by anyone without an account, relevant information is published at the level of transmission and system operators, data regarding installed capacities on all categories of resources. You will see that there are two countries that have published data on storage facilities in Europe for this year. This does not mean that only two countries have storage facilities, but only two have published the data. We are talking about Germany and Romania. We have made this information public, let’s hope that in the coming period other countries, other entities, other transmission and system operators will also make this data public. Yes, I was telling you that we have 100 and a bit megawatts installed. Germany has over 9,500 megawatts installed in storage”, explained Ivan.

“Energy storage: pillar of a sustainable and secure energy system in the European Union” is the theme of the 13th edition of the Brașov Energy Day conference, a reference event for the renewables sector, organized by Repom and COALition, in partnership with PATRES, which will take place on February 7 and 8, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Aurum Brașov Hotel.
