In January 2025, Russia increased its gas supplies to Turkey by 3.7%, reaching 2.78 billion cubic meters, according to TASS calculations based on Eurostat data.
Eurostat figures – largely in line with statistics provided by Turkey’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) – indicate that in January, Turkey imported a total of 2.781 billion cubic meters of Russian gas through the TurkStream and Blue Stream pipelines, marking the third-highest volume in history.
For the whole of 2024, Russia increased its pipeline gas exports to Turkey by 2.6%, exceeding 21 billion cubic meters. Taking into account liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries, the total volume of Russian gas supplies to Turkey exceeded 21.5 billion cubic meters. For comparison, Romania’s entire consumption is about 10 billion cubic meters per year.
Gazprom earlier reported that Turkey had recorded a record monthly gas consumption in February 2025, exceeding 8 billion cubic meters. In addition, according to Gazprom estimates based on data from the Turkish Energy Exchange (EPIAS), gas consumption in Turkey in November-February reached record levels, exceeding 30 billion cubic meters. Announcements by Botaş, Turkey’s state-owned energy company, further confirmed that the country had twice set new daily gas consumption records in February, reaching 333.7 million cubic meters.
Russia supplies natural gas to Turkey through two pipelines from the Black Sea. Blue Stream, operational since early 2003, has a designed capacity of 16 billion cubic meters per year and stretches for 1,213 km. The TurkStream export pipeline, launched in January 2020, consists of two parallel lines – one dedicated to serving Turkish consumers and the other facilitating gas exports to southern and southeastern Europe. The total capacity of TurkStream is 31.5 billion cubic meters per year.
Earlier, TASS, citing data from ENTSO-G, reported that Russian gas supplies to Europe via TurkStream increased by 23% in 2024, reaching 16.7 billion cubic meters. Moreover, in January-February 2025, Russia increased TurkStream gas exports by more than 25% compared to the same period last year, reaching 3.1 billion cubic meters.
