ENGIE Romania, better known in our country for its activity in the natural gas sector, has reached a portfolio of almost 250 MW in renewable projects, according to a company press release celebrating 20 years of presence on the local market.

“Since 2011, the company has also been present on the renewable energy production market, investing over 320 million euros to date in the development of a portfolio of renewable energy capacities totaling 248 MW,” ENGIE says.

The company now has three wind farms totaling a capacity of 178 MW and six photovoltaic farms totaling a capacity of 70 MW and aims to reach an installed capacity of 1 GW by 2030.

ENGIE’s latest move in the renewables segment was the completion of the acquisition of a wind project with an installed capacity of 54 MW, located in the commune of Mereni, Constanța county, an area with high wind potential, an announcement made by the company at the end of April. The wind project was acquired in the “ready to build” stage, with all the necessary building permits to start the works. Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of this year, with commissioning scheduled for 2027.

ENGIE says it has invested 2 billion euros in its 20 years of presence in Romania, a market it entered through the purchase of Distrigaz Sud, the gas distribution network.

“The anniversary of 20 years of presence in Romania is not only a moment of assessment, but also an opportunity to look to the future with confidence. During all this time, we have not only been witnesses, but also active actors of the profound transformations in the energy sector. Through significant investments – of over 2 billion euros – and by involving an exceptional team, we have managed to offer safe, efficient and sustainable solutions for millions of Romanians,” said Nicolas Richard, CEO of ENGIE Romania, in the anniversary press release.

In addition to renewables, ENGIE says that in the past 20 years, the total length of the gas network has almost doubled from 14,200 km to 24,000 km and over 8,000 km of the distribution system in operation have been rehabilitated and modernized. The number of customers connected to the distribution network has also more than doubled since the takeover of Distrigaz Sud, with 2.28 million customers in its portfolio today. The company also says that it has doubled its number of natural gas customers, currently supplying over 2.16 million customers and holding the leading position in the supply of natural gas to household customers.
