The Turceni City Hall has signed a contract with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for a project that aims to create a renewable energy hub.
The project, worth a total of 380 million euros, is the first initiative of this scale in Gorj County, according to a press release posted on the Facebook page of the Turceni Mayor, Constantin Popescu.
The implementation of the project will lead to the use of over 123 hectares of public land (pastures) and over 200 hectares of private land for the creation of agrivoltaic photovoltaic parks, energy storage stations, as well as the production and storage of green hydrogen.
“In the heart of Gorj County, where, for decades, one of the largest quantities of coal-based electricity in Romania was produced, the city of Turceni today opens a new stage of a courageous transition towards green energy, sustainability and partnerships for the future. As mayor of this city, together with the community and my team, I have developed an integrated project with the potential for accelerated implementation, based on local initiative, administrative will and already outlined partnerships. In a county where mature projects in the field of just transition are lacking, Turceni responsibly assumes the role of regional leader”, declared Constantin Popescu.
Partners in the development of this project, as well as in its implementation, are the Bankwatch Romania Association and the South Gorj GAL Association. These strategic partnerships played an important role in the development of the project plan and its alignment with European environmental policies, as well as in the application for technical assistance.
The start of the implementation of this project will be at the beginning of 2026.
The project will contribute to a just transition of the region by increasing the production of electricity from renewable energy sources and will be complementary to other decarbonization investments currently being implemented or to be implemented by the Turceni City Hall.
‘Its successful implementation could represent a national benchmark for projects that contribute to a successful and just energy transition. The development of agrivoltaic photovoltaic parks, the installation of storage stations and the production and storage of green hydrogen, as well as the exploitation of geothermal resources for district heating and agriculture are the main energy components of this integrated approach through which Turceni aims to become a regional pole of energy transition,’ the post also states.
